As Guyana continues to drive economic development as the fastest growing economy in the world, the country is also taking important strides to protect its natural heritage by developing a new Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030 to ensure the protection and conservation of the country’s biodiversity.
In this strategy, the government has committed to designating new protected areas in Guyana to cover 30 percent of the country’s terrestrial area by 2030, up from the current 8.4 percent, in line with international commitments. The first target milestone is to designate new protected areas by the end of 2025 to place 17 percent of the country under protection.
In the face of increasing deforestation, forest fires and rising temperatures in the Amazon biome, FZS supports these important expansion processes for the establishment of new protected areas in Guyana by providing technical and logistical resources for the designation process of new protected areas.
